I am reminded of Henry Petroki's brilliant book - “to engineer is human”. Other interesting reading on this general topic is Henry Petroski's To Engineer is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design. No one wants to learn by mistakes, but we cannot learn enough from successes to go beyond the state of the art. In addition to The Essential Engineer, published in 2010, Petroski has written a dozen other books. That reminds of a book by Henry Petroski called To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design. On a dusty bookshelf at home, I have the book, "To Engineer is Human - The Role of Failure in Successful Design" by Henry Petroski.
